(Mr. Joe and his wife Lois are on the right)
Mr. Joe entered the United States Navy at the age of 16.
His mother and father gave their consent for him to enter the Navy in 1959.
His father served.
His brother Johnny served.
His brother James served.
He served 6 years as a fire control technician in the Navy.
He spent time in Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and the remainder of his time was spent on a ship. He was on the USS Boston, CAG-1- Missile carrier and Goodwill Ship.
Despite serving during Vietnam, he states the one thing he misses about his time in the Navy is the sense of security and camaraderie.
Mr. Joe is in his late 70's and reminisces of his years of service, his eventful life as a civilian, and dreams of a day he can start an organization for children--- to teach them survival skills, bring back the days of playing outside, working with their hands, and away from the computers and cell phones.
With a hopeful heart he says, "The children are our future, they are our legacy, they are what are truly important. If I had the contacts, connections, and money I would make sure that we were spending it on the children-- not materialistic things, but on our future, our legacies, and these children."
U.S.S. Boston (CAG-1)
